The Impact of Technology on Entertainment Production and Distribution

Technology, from augmented reality and virtual reality to automation, artificial intelligence and blockchain, has been a major force in the entertainment industry. It also allows people to access content more conveniently and rapidly.

Streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video offer users access to a vast library of entertainment without the need for cable subscription. They offer movies on televisions, computers, smartphones and tablets alike.

These streaming services offer people a convenient way to watch films on-the-go, which explains why they are growing so rapidly. However, it’s essential to remember that not everyone who has access to a streaming service will be interested in viewing the same content. In such cases, companies must find ways to make it more accessible for a wider audience.

Automated media outlets can also save entertainment organizations time and money by handling more tasks themselves rather than hiring employees to do them. This frees them up to focus on other areas such as content creation, marketing strategies, and publicity campaigns.

AI-based voice search is an excellent example of this type of technology. It utilizes artificial intelligence and machine learning to quickly locate relevant information, improving user experience. It’s ideal for smaller businesses that may not have enough funds to hire full-time staff members.

Digital technologies provide those responsible for producing films, music, or news stories with powerful tools for storytelling. These include tools for analyzing which narratives work (see Behrens et al. 2021) as well as visualization of those narratives.

Digital technologies can bring beloved characters and heroes to the screen in groundbreaking new ways. Imagine Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia being immortalized through a film based on her life and death that uses bits and bytes combined with machine learning techniques for novel footage.

The film industry has been more profoundly impacted by technology than most other industries that have experienced disruption from innovation. The shift from analog to digital has necessitated a radical reimagining of the business model for creating and distributing movies.

Although linear television still accounts for a substantial share of film entertainment, it is becoming an aging medium and losing ground to streaming services. Now, viewers can access films whenever and wherever they please, fast forwarding through commercials to get directly to the content they desire at an expedited pace.

Another major disruption has been the shift from print newspapers to online media. In America alone, print newspaper readership declined by 10% between 2003 and 2012.

Media producers and distributors are adapting their business models to accommodate the shift in consumer behaviour.
